Text from obituary:
"Alan Lee Gustafson, 77, of Coal Valley, IL, fell asleep in death on Friday, January 23, 2015, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 7002 John Deere Parkway, Moline, Illinois, on Monday, January 26, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family.
Alan was born in Moline, Illinois, to Eric and Esther Gustafson on October 24, 1937. He attended Orion High School and Northrop Aeronautical Institute in California. He married Fern Fuller on June 22, 1957. They lived in California with their two children, Mark and Kim, until 1970 when they returned to Illinois. He worked as a machinist at Abrahams Machine Services in Davenport from 1970 to 1998. Alan then retired from Oscar Mayer Foods Corporation in Davenport in 2007, after working there as a mechanic for 10 years.
His hobbies included playing the French horn, singing bass and riding a motorcycle. He enjoyed watching sports, especially NASCAR races.
For the last 50 years, Alan’s primary vocation was being one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He especially treasured the privilege of serving as an elder in the Rock Island and Moline Congregations for over 40 years. He thoroughly enjoyed helping others, whether inside the congregation or in the community through his Bible education work.
Alan is survived by his wife Fern, daughter Kim (James) Thiergart of Coal Valley, son Mark (Phyllis) Gustafson of Patterson, New York, brother Jim “Gus” (Joan) Gustafson of Coal Valley, grandson Brandon (Meredith) Thiergart of St. Louis, Missouri, and many nieces and nephews."
